2000: The golden year for Indian beauty queens

2000 is considered the golden year for Indian beauty queens.  This year, all the three Miss India winners won the most prestigious international beauty pageants.  In a pleasant surprise, India bagged the crown of Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific for the year 2000.  This proved the dominance of Indian beauty and intellect across the globe.

Every year, beauty pageants are held to select a woman leading in all dimensions of beauty, intellect and responsibility.  She is a source of inspiration to thousands of women.  Undoubtedly, India has always been a country of beautiful and gorgeous women.

And this fact got proved when in the year 2000, Miss India Lara Dutta, Miss India first runner up Priyanka Chopra and Miss India second runner up Diya Mirza got the crown of Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific.  These ladies made the country feel with pride.

Let us have a look at the thrilling stories of these three beauties that brought the world at their feet.

Lara Dutta

Miss India 2000 Lara Dutta represented India as Miss Universe held in Cyprus.  She won the title of Miss Universe, by a unanimous vote, making a record in this beauty contest.  She got the highest individual score in any category in the history of the Miss Universe contest.

Lara Dutta is the second Indian to win the highest global beauty contest.  Sushmita Sen is the first Indian to get the Miss Universe crown in 1994.  Not only this, but Lara Dutta was also the winner of Best National Costume and Best Swimsuit in this beauty pageant.

The final round that made her winner

During the final question-answer round, each of the top three contestants was asked the same question: “Right now, there is a protest that has been staged in outside the stadium posing pageants as an affront to women.  Convince them that they are wrong.”

Lara Dutta gave the beautiful reply that made her the winner of the crown. She said,

“Pageants like Miss Universe give us young women a platform to foray in the fields that we want to and forge ahead, be it entrepreneurship, be it the armed forces, be it politics.  It gives us a platform to voice our choices and opinions and it makes us strong and independent that we are today.”

Other achievements and works

The achievement of Lara Dutta didn’t stop here.  She was also elected as Miss Grand Slam 2000, hosted by the pageants portal Global Beauties.  She is the first Indian winner to get this title.

After the crown of Miss Universe, she became the Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Population Fund in 2001.  While taking this appointment, she said,

“Celebrities with the power to affect their impressionable minds, therefore, have a moral responsibility to impart positive messages.  I am committed to using any influence I may have to do just that as a Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Population Fund.”

Lara Dutta also made her career as Bollywood actress and producer.  She received several accolades including Filmfare awards.  The beauty diva has been one of the most stylish actresses in the Hindi film industry.  She is a strong supporter of Me Too Movement in India.  Lara Dutta married eminent tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi in 2010.

Priyanka Chopra

Belonging to Jamshedpur town of Jharkhand, Priyanka Chopra finished as the Miss India first runner-up 2000.   Later, she brought home the crown of Miss World 2000 and Miss World Continental Beauty – Asia and Oceania held in London.  Priyanka was only 18 years old when she became Miss World, surpassing 95 other talented contestants from different countries.  What a great achievement at this tender age!

She received the crown of Miss World form her predecessor Yukta Mookhey who was also from India.  It was an emotional moment when Yukta Mukhey, Miss World 1999 handed over the crown to her successor Priyanka Chopra.  Priyanka Chopra is the fifth Miss world and the second consecutive winner from her country.

Confidence, attitude and beauty became key to success

The perfect combination of beauty, confidence and brains made Priyanka Chopra win this prestigious title.  However, an interesting incident occurred during one of the elimination rounds when she was asked to name the most successful woman living today and why.

The confident Priyanka Chopra answered this way:

“There are a lot of people I admire, but one of the most admirable people is Mother Teresa, who has been so compassionate, considerate and kind.”

Priyanka Chopra deserves appreciations for this answer.  But she missed the word ‘living’ as she had to take the name of a living person.  Mother Teresa had passed away in 1997.  However, her confidence, positive attitude and beauty impressed the judges and audience and she became successful to take home the crown.

Awards and social causes

After winning Miss World crown, she pursued a highly successful career in Bollywood.  She received several awards including the National Film Award and five Filmfare Awards.  The Indian government honoured her with the Padma Shri Award in 2016.  She also worked in Hollywood thriller series and comedies.

Priyanka Chopra has been working with UNICEF since 2006.  UNICEF appointed her Goodwill Ambassador for Child in 2010 and 2016.  She also works for the environment and women’s rights, gender equality, gender pay gap and feminism.  The beauty queen married American singer and actor Nick Jonas.

Diya Mirza

Diya Mirza was the second runner up Femina Miss India 2000.  She created history when she won Miss Asia Pacific 2000 held in Manila.  Diya Mirza made a hat-trick of India winning the International beauty pageants in the same year; Lara Dutta won Miss Universe and Priyanka Chopra Miss World.  This was really a pride moment for India as for the first time a nation had picked up all three major beauty contests in a single year.

Diya Mirza is the third Indian to win this title.  Before that, Zeenat Aman in 1970 and Tara Anne Fonseca in 1973 were the winners of Miss Asia Pacific title.  She also made a career in Hindi film industry and won many film awards.

Social services

Besides this, Diya Mirza has been involved in community services.  She has been working with Cancer Patients Aid Association, Child Right for You (CRY) and People for Ethical Treatment for Animals (PETA).  The beauty diva became UN Environment’s goodwill ambassador for India on two occasions.  Thereafter, she won the Green Award IIFA for spreading awareness about environmental issues.

Tilak Mehta, 13 year old student keeps the foundation of a company

13-year-old student sets up a company worth crores

Can a school going boy be the founder of a business startup? Can he be the owner of a company which holds control over 400 employees? How can a class VIII student carry away with his studies and the company altogether?

This seems to be unrealistic and impossible. But a 13-year-old student has made it possible and has become one of the youngest entrepreneurs of India. Tilak Mehta from Mumbai is such a prodigy who has founded a technology-driven courier company namely Papers N Parcels (PNP).

He not only convinced a banker to quit his job and accept the CEO post of PNP but also succeeded to include employees of Dabbawalas in his company.

This is how the company functions

The technology-based company functions through an app with the same name. Customers have to first register on the app, and after login, they can book the order.

The company delivers the items on the same day. It charges only from Rs 80 to 140 according to the weight of the item. It accepts the item up to 3 kilograms. So the fast delivery and cheaper cost have made the company a big success.

What made him inspire to set up PNP

So, how did he get inspiration for setting up the company?  In fact, one of his exam books remained in his uncle’s home that was in another part of Mumbai.  He needed it urgently.   When his father returned home tired, he couldn’t get the courage to ask him about the book.

Hence, he couldn’t manage to get the book back and when he enquired about the courier service, he came to know that he would have to pay nearly Rs 250/- which was itself the price of the book.

It struck to his mind that there must be a courier service in the city which could be in the budget of common people. One day he saw a person of Dabbawala, the famous food delivery network of Mumbai. Tilak Mehta got another idea that with the collaboration of Dabbawalas, the courier service could be managed properly.

Tilak Mehta talked about the idea with his father who got convinced. Thereafter, he discussed with his uncle who was a banker.

His father helped him develop the app. His uncle quit the bank job and became the CEO of the company. Several employees of Dabbawalas also agreed to work with the company. After the hard work and research of 8 months, his business started in 2018.

Papers N Parcels delivers 1200 items everyday and till date, it has delivered more than one lakh items. Presently, pathology labs, boutique shops and brokerages are availing the services of the company.

Today, Papers N Parcels employs 300 persons of Dabbawala and 100 of its own. Tilak Mehta has the dream of making the company with a turnover of Rs 100 crore by 2020 and expanding the services all over India.

Award

For his prodigious entrepreneurship, he has been awarded India Maritime Awards in July 2018.

This dynamic child has infinite possibilities inside him. There may be many more Tilaks in our country. It is the responsibility of our society to explore such ingenious children.

Tilak Mehta is an inspiration for students. We wish this young entrepreneur a brilliant future.

Ranu Mondal

Ranu Mondal: Journey from railway platform to singing studio

This is the era of social media.  If a person has talent, nothing can stop him or her to earn name and fame.   Social media play an important role to bring out the talent and skill of any person before the world.  The power of social media is such that it can make an ordinary person a big celebrity.  Such is the story of Ranu Mondal.

Ranu Mondal was once a helpless woman and was earning her living by singing at a railway station.  Then a video of her singing an old song went viral on social media and she became a star overnight.

The life of Ranu Mondal is no less than a fairytale.  The 59 years old woman belongs to Ranaghat, West Bengal.  In her 20s, she would sing in a local orchestra club.  The audience called her Ranu Bobby after her performance in singing the song from a superhit Hindi movie Bobby.  In this way, she would earn some money.  However, she was forced to leave singing as no family member supported her musical skill.

Later on, she was married to Babul Mondal.  After the marriage, the couple shifted to Mumbai.  In an unfortunate incident, her husband expired and she returned to her village Ranaghat.

Ranu was living in extreme poverty.  She has also one daughter.  Life of duo got worsened.  A desperate Ranu started singing old Hindi songs at Ranaghat station and in return, people would offer her some food or money.

Her daughter disliked her singing at the railway station.  She left her mother and didn’t contact her for 10 years.  Ranu was leading a life of a beggar.  Only then a software engineer Atindra Chakraborty entered her life and made her destiny.  He noticed Ranu’s melodious voice.  Atindra made a video recording of her song and posted on his Facebook account.  In the video, she is seen singing the evergreen song “Ek pyar ka nagma hai”, originally played by famous vocalist Lata Mangeshkar.

Very soon, the video went viral on many social media platforms and her voice was appreciated by common people and big celebrities.  Knowing her singing talent, Sony Entertainment TV Channel invited her to ‘Superstar Singer’ reality show.  She impressed everyone present in the show with her mellifluous voice.

Himesh Reshammiya, the famous Bollywood singer proved to be a second destiny maker for Ranu.  He offered her for a song in his upcoming movie ‘Happy Hardy Heer’.  Himesh soon recorded a song ‘Teri Meri Kahani which also became much popular on social media.

Ranu’s talent is beyond explanation.  Such talent is rarely seen.  Credit also goes to Atindra Chakraborty and Himesh Reshammiya who noticed her charismatic voice and made the way of success for her.  Had her family supported Ranu’s singing skill, she would have become a renowned vocalist much earlier.  However, it is said that everything happens at the time fixed by destiny and Ranu’s good time has come now.

Telangana MP G Kishan Reddy

Telangana MP accepts books for the celebration of his electoral victory

India is changing.  Indian people are coming up with innovative ways to do something.  In this context, G Kishan Reddy, an MP from Telangana has set an example.

Kishan Reddy has won the Lok Sabha election 2019 from Secunderabad constituency.  On his victory, he requested his supporters to congratulate him with books instead of garlands or sweets.

On his appeal, a large number of party workers and volunteers visited his office and donated notebooks and storybooks.  Very soon, his office turned into the storeroom with the bundle of books.  These books will be distributed among economically disadvantaged students.

Generally, party workers celebrate the victory of their leader with great pomp and show.  They offer garland, shawl, sweets and bouquets.  However, these gifts are of little use.  There is also the wastage of money.

So, Kishan’s initiative has a great message for the country.   With such plans, the celebration becomes useful and significant.  A good message goes to citizens and it cultivates high morale among countrymen.

Gifts like garlands and bouquets are in no way helpful for anyone, but rather they cause pollution.  So leaders of our country should refuse such gifts.  They, instead, should urge their supporters to bring gifts that may be utilized for needy persons.

plant trees

Plant trees before getting a graduation degree

Deforestation has become a worldwide problem.  “Save tree-Save earth” has become a global slogan.  We cannot imagine life without trees.

Despite knowing the importance of trees, we are cutting down them.  No proper efforts are made for plantation of trees.  Considering this crisis, a Southeast Asian country has come up with a superb plan.

This country is the Philippines.  Its government has proposed a new bill called-“Graduation Legacy for the Environment Act”.  This act makes mandatory for elementary, high school and college-level students to plant at least 10 trees before graduating.

The government agencies will ensure the compliance of the act.  They will look after nursery establishment, seedling production, site preparation and evaluation of the work.

Students will plant trees on forest areas, civil and military reservations, rural and urban areas, inactive mining sites and other suitable places.  The selection of trees will be according to the climate, location and topography of the areas.

Preference will be given to indigenous species of trees.  Philippine is the country where only 20% of trees are left.  Nearly 175 million new trees will be planted every year if the initiative properly implemented.

So the Philipino government’s proposal is really inspiring.  This will create awareness among students to plant more and more trees.

If we talk about our country, we may be proud that India is among the top ten countries in the world with the most forest area.  However, the forest area in India is only 24% which may decrease in the coming years.

So, we can learn from the Philipino government and bring the suchlike proposal in the parliament to save trees before they come in an alarming situation.

Saalumarada Thimmakka

Padma Awards got blessed by ‘Mother of Trees’

The Padma award ceremony 2019 was unique and exceptional in many ways.  This time, the awardees were not from elite groups, but many of them were common people.  By honouring common people, the country is reclaiming the true spirit of democracy – of the people, for the people and by the people.

One of the commoners among Padma awardees was Saalumarada Thimmakka.  While receiving the Padma Shri Award, Saalumarada Thimmakka, known as ‘Vriksha Mate’ blessed the Indian President by gently putting her palm on his head. The moment was so heartening that Rashtrapati Bhawan got echoed with thunderous applause.

The strict protocol even got weakened before this mahanayika when Honourable the President bowed his head to receive the blessing.

This is our great culture, our glorious tradition where a person sitting on the highest position is humble before Mother’s Love!

The life of S. Thimmakka from Karnataka is full of determination and perseverance.  It gives us the motivation to live and move forward even though we don’t get what we want.

Unable to bear a child, she found solace in planting trees with the support of her husband.

The couple worked hard in the fields to plant trees and cared for them. Sometimes, they had to walk for 4 kilometres to bring water for plantation.

106-year-old Thimmakka has been planting since the age of 40 years. She has planted 385 banyan and 8000 other trees.  Her husband passed away in 1991.

She has also got Karnataka Rajyotsava Award from the state government and National Citizen Award from the government of India.  Her selfless work has inspired several people to take up the initiative to save the environment.

However, this is saddening to hear that she receives only Rs. 500/- for her old age pension.

A great environmentalist should not be treated like this.  The government should take some steps so that she may live a respectful life having no financial crisis.
